"Building Construction Handbook," Third Edition, edited by Frederick S. Merritt, 992 pages; 6 x 9; $34.50; McGraw-Hill. Publication: August, 1975.

A concise, comprehensive guide to every facet of modern building design and construction, the third edition of Frederick S. Merritt's "Building Construction Handbook" offers authoritative explanations, data, and advice on the full range of potential building problems (McGraw-Hill, $34.50).

Incorporating the latest developments in construction technology, this thoroughly rewritten and revised Handbook includes sections on engineered brick masonry, with information on the design of brick walls, and on fire protection. Basic changes in design specifications, the introduction of new materials and dimensions for building products, effective techniques for environment control and energy conservation, and innovations in building practices that have occurred since publication of the second edition, are featured throughout this virtually new work.

The 26 contributing authors, all experts in their respective fields, emphasize the fundamentals of building construction and recommend the use of certain techniques, materials, and equipment in particular situations. For those responsible for making decisions concerning the construction field, information on cost estimating and construction management is also provided.

The acoustics section has been rewritten to stress basic principles of sound control and measurement, and the section on the business, arts and profession of architecture gives solid advice on the best methods of obtaining and profitably executing design contracts.

Frederick Merritt, former Senior Editor of Engineering News-Record, is a consulting engineer with many years' experience in building and bridge design, structural analysis, and construction. He is also the author of numerous publications in his field.
