13th Ontario Architectural Design Awards

The architectural firm of Moffat, Moffat & Kinoshita was the 1977 Award of Excellence winner in the 13th annual Ontario Masons' Relations Council Masonry Design Awards program. The firm was cited for its design of the Metropolitan Toronto West Regional Detention Centre in Etobicoke, Ont.

Gene Kinoshita, representing the architectural firm, and Larry Barber, superintendent of the Regional Detention Centre and representing the owner, the Ministry of Correctional Services, received their awards from Maxwell Miller, MRAIC, president, Ontario Association of Architects. The presentations took place on October 27 at a special awards ceremony in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Toronto.

The Award of Excellence and six Awards of Merit were given in recognition of outstanding masonry design and workmanship on buildings that have been erected in Ontario within the past four years. The six Awards of Merit, in alphabetical order, were presented to the following architectural firms:

Lett/Smith, for Chelsea Square, Markham; Jerome Markson, for Civic Garden Centre, Edwards Gardens, Toronto; McLaren Gerrie Anthony Butler, for the Hamilton Wentworth Regional Police Administration Building, Hamilton; Moffet & Duncan, for the Mississauga Transit Facility, Mississauga; Raymond Moriyama, for Burnhamthorpe Public Library, Mississauga, and Sievenpiper, for Thomson Court Apartments, Markham.

The judging was conducted by three well known Toronto architects-Keith Wagland, Leslie Rebanks and George Gibson. Fifty-seven buildings by 39 architectural firms were entered in the competition.

The sponsor of the competition, the Ontario Masons' Relations Council, is a unique example of labor-management cooperation. It is an organization representing the Ontario Region of the Clay Brick Association of Canada; Ontario Provincial Conference of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen; Ontario Concrete Block Association, and the Ontario Masonry Contractors Association.
