Brick Design Selected for 33-story
Addition to Hyatt Regency Chicago
Placing some of the first brick at the base of a 33-story addition to the Hyatt Regency Chicago that will make it one of the largest luxury convention/exhibition hotels in the world are Tony Krabal (left), director of sales & marketing, and Colgate F. Holmes, Hyatt Hotels Corp. midwest regional vice president and general manager of the hotel.
Scheduled for completion in the spring, 1980, the $78 million expansion will double the number of guest rooms (from 971 to 2,041) and more than quadruple meeting/exhibit space (from 33,000 to 185,000 sq. ft.). Architect for the project is A. Epstein & Sons, Inc., with Metropolitan Structures, Inc. the general contractor. Both firms are based in Chicago.
According to the Brick Institute of America, the present Hyatt Regency Chicago is the world's tallest brick-clad hotel. The new guest-room tower and below-street-level substructure that will house the meeting/exhibition facilities is situated at a right angle to the original hotel and matches it architecturally. Repeated design elements include not only the shape and height of the present tower, but brown brick and bronze window glass.
The Hyatt Regency Chicago is located at 151 E. Wacker Dr. in Illinois Center, the largest downtown planned development in the country.
Reuse of Small Brick Buildings Saved Energy
Equivalent to 8,000 Gallons of Gasoline
The owner of a small, two-story brick carriage house in Washington, D.C., decided to turn it into three apartments instead of tearing it down. A recent study showed that the exterior shell of the carriage house embodies more than one billion BTUs of energy (the energy required to build it), equivalent to the energy provided by about 8,000 gallons of gasoline.
