MASONRY DESIGN NOTES - PREVENTING MOISTURE PENETRATION IN MASONRY WALLS

Moisture penetration through masonry walls can cause considerable damage to interior finishes and building contents. It can also reduce the thermal resistance of insulation and cause corrosion of metal components within the wall.
The following design considerations can help prevent moisture penetration:
* **Use high-quality materials.** Select masonry units and mortar that are durable and resistant to water penetration.
* **Provide proper flashing.** Install flashing at all points where water can enter the wall, such as at the base of the wall, above windows and doors, and at roof intersections.
* **Use a water-repellent coating.** Apply a water-repellent coating to the exterior of the wall to help prevent water from penetrating the surface.
* **Provide proper drainage.** Ensure that water can drain away from the wall by providing proper grading and drainage systems.
* **Design for proper ventilation.** Provide adequate ventilation within the wall cavity to help remove moisture that does penetrate the wall.
By following these design considerations, you can help prevent moisture penetration and ensure the long-term performance of your masonry walls.

LABOR RELATIONS
**NLRB Rules Union Fine Against Supervisor-Member Illegal**
The National Labor Relations Board has ruled that a union violated the National Labor Relations Act when it fined a supervisor-member for working during a strike. The Board found that the union's action coerced the employer in the selection of its representatives for the purposes of collective bargaining or the adjustment of grievances.

**OSHA Issues New Regulations on Noise Exposure**
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued new regulations on noise exposure in the workplace. The regulations require employers to implement a hearing conservation program if employees are exposed to noise levels at or above 85 decibels averaged over an 8-hour period. The program must include monitoring of noise levels, audiometric testing of employees, and the provision of hearing protection devices.
