Hawkesbury District General Hospital
Hawkesbury, Ontario
The architectural firm of Neish Owen Rowland & Roy recently completed Hawkesbury District General Hospital, a brick masonry health care facility in eastern Ontario. The 100-bed, two-story hospital is situated on an 11-acre wooded site that is amenable to both patients and staff.
In order to reduce staff requirements for evening and night shifts, all patient beds were placed on one level utilizing a double-corridor style nursing unit, branching in two groups of 40 beds each from a central circulation point. All treatment and diagnostic facilities together with administration and supply departments are located on the ground floor.
The first floor was planned with departments surrounding an internal courtyard which provides an interesting enclosed space that is used for recreation and as an extension of the physiotherapy department. The roof has white and gray designs to enliven the second floor patient's view.
SWR Engineering Ltd. was the engineer on the project with consultation provided by P. Johnson & Associates (dietary) and J. Williams (laboratory). Ellis-Don Ltd. was the general contractor and Brikon Masonry Inc. the mason contractor.
