Masonry: The Material for Eternity
By PAUL SNYDER
President, Unique Productions
THOUSANDS OF YEARS ago, the ancient Greeks and Romans were the first to build architecturally advanced structures. As they refined their craft, some began to take note of the most beautiful. After a time, certain structures, because of their great size, incredible beauty, advanced design and refined workmanship, became known as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. From Egypt's Great Pyramids, to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, to the Temple of Artemis, ancient builders used masonry exclusively. Their reason: they considered it the material for eternity.
HAILED AS THE EIGHTH Wonder of the World when completed in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge required amazing feats of engineering and construction. Again, to accomplish the task, masonry both brick and stone was selected as the building material for the huge supporting towers. Over 100 years later, all who see these massive Gothic towers can appreciate the beautiful artistry in stone and steel. Architectural wonders are still being created today. From stately tabernacles, with layers of arches, corbels, brick dentiles and angle bonds, to simple windows and doors framed wih unique brick and stone patterns, to fences and planters, masonry can make even the most simple structure a beautiful work of art. Even something as simple as a mailbox can suggest volumes to the casual observer.
