Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Thank you for saying things about the regulatory process that are absolutely true (From the Editor "If Doctors and Professors Built Walls," Jan. 2003).

In ergonomics, it is the same as with the EPA's MACT Partnership. Only the big partner gets to make any decisions. My own opinion is that practitioners (builders) may be purposefully omitted from panels just so the predetermined or desired result is obtained.

BRAVO.

Regards,
Denis Brosnan, Ph.D., PE
The National Brick Research Center/Clemson University
(Professor-after being in industry 18 years)

P. S. This opinion is my own as a Registered Professional Engineer and does not represent any opinion of the officers, trustees and employees of Clemson University.

Dear Editor,

The article on pour insulation versus pump-in insulation ("Pour it on or Pump it in?" Jan. 2003) states that you can increase the fire rating of a two-hour rated wall to four hours by using core fill 500, Zonolite and vermiculite, but not Perlite insulation.

Unless this has changed lately, the U.L. Fire Resistance Index states that the Block Fire Resistance Ratings can be increased by two hours if all core spaces are filled with loose dry expanded slag, burned clay or shale, water repellent vermiculite masonry fill insulation, or silicone treated Perlite loose fill insulation.

Just trying to keep the temperature cool.

Sincerely.
Robert Treuner

Response from Jack Temple:

Dear Editor,

Your reader is correct. I misspoke about Perlite not being able to increase the fire rating on a two-hour rated CMU to four hours. Sorry for the error. I enjoyed reading the article, however.

Sincerely,
Jack Temple, III
