Cincinnati UMA Holds Structural Glazed Tile Promotional Meeting

ROUTE TO..

One of the most successful promotional programs under way in the Masonry Industry is the one conducted by the Unit Masonry Association of Cincinnati. Recently they conducted for their area a very highly successful informational meeting on structural glazed tile. The enthusiasm and genuine interest exhibited by the architects who attended make this, perhaps, one of the outstanding meetings of its kind this year. Following are pertinent facts concerning the meeting which were presented by their executive director, Mr. William F. Collins.

PURPOSE-During recent years the use of structural glazed tile has rapidly declined in the area and this meeting was held to stimulate the use of the product.

PLACE, TIME, DATE-A very fine country club, Kenwood Country Club, was selected as the site of the meeting. Since dinner was to be served, a 5:45 P.M. starting time was chosen. In addition, a Thursday evening was agreed upon as the best possible day.

WHO ATTENDED Over 145 guests which included architectural firms, hospital boards, school boards and representatives of industrial firms. Also attending were tile manufacturers and their local representatives along with officials of the Mason Contractors Association and the Union.

FEATURED SPEAKER Considera- ble effort was taken to select a speaker who was well versed in the subject matter, the use of structural glazed facing tile. After extensive study Mr. Orville H. Bauer of the architectural firm of Bellman, Gillett & Richards, Toledo, Ohio, was selected. Mr. Bauer is associated with a firm that specifies a tremendous amount of glazed tile and is familiar with the local conditions, being a graduate of the University of Cincinnati.

PROGRAM-Dinner was served at 5:45 P.M. The meeting was then started at 7:00 P.M. Mr. Bauer then presented his remarks. At the conclusion of his talk a panel consisting of (1) Mason Contractor (2) Union Bricklayer (3) Tile Manufacturer (4) Local Distributor (5) Research Official (6) UMA representative (7) Featured speaker Mr. Bauer then took over the program to conduct a question and answer session. At 8:15 P.M. the speaking part of the program was concluded and the architects then visited displays which had been set up. Six individual exhibits were available which presented to the architects the latest in color, sizes and products. In addition, all available literature on structural glazed tile was on display for them to order to be sent to their offices. During this time period Structural Clay Products Research Foundation conducted its highly interesting acoustical tile demonstration which attracted considerable attention. After all had ample time to view the displays and see the demonstration, refreshments were served for another hour and a half.

RESULTS Since this Project Sheet is being issued less than 60 days from the date of the meeting, it is somewhat premature to analyze the final results. However, excellent comments have been received from architects and manufacturers, and today five jobs in the area are now considering glazed tile.

COST-It is estimated all cost for the entire evening averaged out to approximately $9.00 per person.

One of the effective literature displays which was placed around the perimeter of the meeting room. Here architects could easily view the material with a handy order card could request for delivery direct to their offices literature they desired.
