National Association of Distributors & Dealers of Structural Clay Products

John H. Donohue, III
President

The nation's leading brick and tile outlets, the members of the National Association of Distributors and Dealers of Structural Clay Products, welcome the inauguration of MASONRY and extend sincere congratulations to the Mason Contractors Association of America for furnishing this valuable contribution to the communicative network of our Industry.

As we masonry partners ready ourselves for the competitive battle for bigger markets in the 60's, it becomes more and more vital for every bricklayer, every mason contractor, distributor, dealer and manufacturer to know just what is new, what is important, and what the other fellow is doing. Only by open, frequent and knowledgeable reporting of this information can the people of our Industry be expected to know and to do those things which will advance our abilities and our competitive status. Your new magazine provides the vehicle for such reporting may it continue to do so for many, many MASONRY years to come.

National Lime Association

We were pleased to learn of MCAA launching its brand new magazine MASONRY this month, which will be devoted entirely to the masonry field. There is no doubt about this major construction segment being significant enough to warrant its own trade publication. Our Association, in particular, considers this an important field since a good proportion of total lime output is used in masonry mortar. Lime is also used in sand-lime brick and to a lesser extent in concrete masonry units. One indication of our interest in this field is a sound-color movie we have in production, which will extol masonry construction per se and outline the advantages of lime in mortar.

Our best wishes for success in your new publication.

Robert S. Boynton
General Manager

OUR COVER

The Imperial House New York City

A true-toned gray "jumbo" size ceramic glazed facing brick forms the attractive exterior of New York City's newest and tallest residential building the Imperial House.

Towering 30 stories above what its architects describe as an "exotic garden setting in the heart of aristocratic Lenox Hill," this newest apartment dwelling occupies an entire block, bounded by 68th and 69th streets and Lexington and Third avenues.

To create this design for ultra-modern housing and to do it economically, the architectural firm of Emery Roth & Sons specified a gray ceramic glazed facing brick that is 24"-4" over standard. The units have an impervious surface which is self-cleaning and durable.

The 2%" x 3%" x 8" units supplied by Natco Corp, were used on all four elevations of the structure and were installed by LaSala Contracting Co., Yonkers, N. Y., masonry contractor. Some 14 million units were used.

More than 100,000 norman-size glazed face brick-24" x 3%" x 11% were used in stack bond for garden walls and flower boxes.

NEWS OF THE WESTERN CHAPTERS

E. LYLE PARSLEY, Portland Chapter, is the new president of the Unit Masonry Association of Oregon. Serving the UMA with Parsley will be: Doug Remick, Stone Center, vice president; Ralph Holm, representative, Bricklayers Local #1, secretary; and George Waldie, Mannon Building Supply Co., treasurer. Current UMA activity in Oregon includes a program aimed at putting a full-time man in the field to promote masonry in the area.

HARRY HEUER, veteran MCAA member, has resigned from chairmanship of the Portland (Ore.) Apprentice Committee after 15 years of service. Montie Smallen, Portland MCA member, has been elected to succeed Mr. Heuer as chairman of the committee. Since establishment of the committee in 1946, Mr. Heuer sparked a drive to establish a program for the group and formulated a course of study for apprentices. These goals were achieved, and advancements of the group were recognized by the National Joint Bricklaying Apprenticeship Committee through its Certificate of Commendation awarded the Portland Committee for the years 1956, 1957 and 1958.

PORTLAND MCA Chapter along with other segments of the building construction industry, has formed a new organization in the Pacific Northwest.. the Construction Industry Committee. Purpose of the CIC is to provide a method of intelligent and direct education and communication to all parties in the Building Construction Industry, thereby increasing the efficiency of the industry and making it a more economical and useful tool for the public good. Among goals of the Committee will be (1) standardize the retainage policy on projects in the area; (2) establishment of percentages high enough to accomplish efficiency and protection for compliance with plans and specifications and to insure prompt completions and corrections, without being so high as to raise the cost of construction by foreing high financing costs upon the contractor.

Representing the Portland MCA Chapter on the Committee are Leonard Pardue, Montie Smallen and Nels Smith.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST group dined well at recent dinners through efforts of MCA member E. Lyle Parsley, who was successful in bagging moose, elk and venison. His new title "The Great White Hunter."

AUXILIARY members of the Portland MCA have participated in several commendable endeavors-sponsorship of a Boy Scout Troop for retarded boys and presentation of needed articles to the County Home for the Aged.
