The Brick & Tile Institute of Ontario held its annual meeting in Willowdale, Ontario, earlier this month. Hugh MacDonald, former engineer with SCPI, is regional director for the Institute. Col. Giles Evans has been named executive secretary of the Masonry Institute, Inc., Washington, D. C... Sir Winston Churchill, wartime leader of England, is one of the world's most famed bricklayers. A capacity crowd of more than 5,000 attended the recent convention of the National Concrete Masonry Asso. Concrete Industries Exposition Jan. 30-Feb. 2, according to reports from William P. Markert, director of promotion for NCMA. The convention was held at Detroit's new Cobo Hall, a huge complex covering 15 acres in the heart of that city. Some 1 million concrete masonry units went into the construction of the new structure, Markert said. The Texas Concrete Masonry Association will hold its semi-annual convention April 13-15 at the Windsor Hotel in Abilene.
The high-lift grouting system, to be reported by Oscar Person at the MCAA convention in Philadelphia, is said to be one of the most complete and concise testing projects ever done in masonry, and has been given a value of nearly $50,000. More than 500 letters of inquiry concerning the system have been received from construction sources. Some 10,000 copies of the high-level grout report have been distributed to architects, engineers, building inspectors and masonry contractors.
Bob Dalton, assistant manager of the Cleveland Chapter, MCAA, is recovering from surgery performed last month as a result of back injuries. Anthony Perri, Brooklyn, N. Y., vice-president East, celebrated his birthday Jan. 19... MacFarlane Construction Co., MCAA member, served as official mason contractor for the Concrete Industries Exposition, held in conjunction with the annual convention of the National Concrete Masonry Association, in Detroit's new Cobo Hall.
Check into details of the Post-Convention Weekend Feb. 22-26 in and around New York City. The price is right-less than $125-and early registration indicates an interested party of mason contractors will take this opportunity to visit Manhattan.
