Apprentice Champs

Compete for U.S. Title April 7-12

Detroit, Mich. Eighty young bricklayer apprentices will compete for the title of 1961 Champion Bricklayer Apprentice in the 13th Annual Bricklayer Apprentice Competition at Cobo Hall in Detroit on April 7-12, John J. Murphy, President of the Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers' International Union, announeed.

The apprentices, winners of local and state contests, will make their bid for the championship at the annual AFL-CIO Trades and Label Show in Detroit. Local and state competitions are sponsored by bricklayer unions and by mason contractors.

The 1961 champion will receive, in addition to the national title, $500 cash from the Bricklayers' Union. Three more cash awards will be made by the Bricklayers' Union: $300 for second place; $200 for third place and $100 for fourth place.

In addition the champ will be awarded the Belden Trophy and $100 in cash from Structural Clay Products Institute, national association of brick and structural tile manufacturers. The Mason Contrctors Association of America will award the champion a plaque. The competition is strongly supported by SCPI and the MCAA, future employers of the young men.

During this six-day match, the state champions will build actual brick walls as a demonstration of their bricklayer skills. Today's apprentice must complete three to four years of careful training covering every phase of the craft before they qualify as journeymen. In addition to on-the-job bricklaying training, the apprentice receives 144 hours of related classroom instruction each year in blueprint reading, the use of tools, mathematics, mortars and cost estimating.

The purpose of this contest, according to BM & PIU President John J. Murphy, "is to show that the apprentices affiliated with this International Union are thoroughly trained in every phase of the trade and on completion of their apprenticeship will be qualified to perform the various types of masonry work required by today's building."
