out Shelter
enough space to take care of a family for two weeks during an emergency. Therefore it should be equipped with blankets and bedding, water, pre-cooked foods and plenty of fruit juice. Essentials include a battery-powered radio to receive official instructions, a stove for heat and cooking, and containers for garbage and human waste.
Many people are under the impression that a fallout shelter is some ant-like dugout that must lie idle until such time as an attack occurs. Actually, when properly furnished, a basement shelter can readily serve a dual purpose; enabling the family to put it to everyday use. Shelters, for instance, can be fixed up to double as a game room, den, darkroom or even a guest room.
For further information and plans on how to build a family fallout shelter, write to the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization, Battle Creek, Michigan.
