BUILD FALLOUT SHELTER OR OREGON GOVERNOR
Installation of a radiation fallout shelter at the home of Governor and Mrs. Mark Hatfield in Salem, Oregon, was completed recently.
The shelter was constructed in the basement of the Hatfield home as a public service project by members of the Unit Masonry Association, a group of mason contractors, bricklayers and material dealers.
The UMA is the group which constructed the walls of the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in a one-day "building bee" and which also provided public service construction of the press room facilities in the capitol building in Salem.
Gov. Hatfield, who is national chairman of the Governors' Civil Defense Committee, is one of the nation's chief executives to follow the recommendations of Gov. Nelson Rockefeller of New York who also had fallout shelters installed in his residence.
In a message to the state legislature in connection with a bill providing for limited tax exemptions for shelter construction, Hatfield told of his concern at emphasis on evacuation of target areas "to the virtual exclusion of programs of protection against radiation fallout."
Col. Arthur M. Sheets, director of The Oregon State Civil Defense Agency, had words of praise for the governor's shelter program.
Oregon's governor Mark O. Hatfield (left) now has a radiation fallout shelter in the basement of his Salem home, built as a public service project by the Unit Masonry Association of Oregon of which E. L. Parsley, Portland, is president. At the same time the governor signed into law a bill which provides limited tax exemptions for homeowners who construct family fallout shelters as a move to encourage Oregon citizens to provide greater protection for themselves against radiation fallout.
