BUILD FALLOUT SHELTE

(Continued from page 11) the Unit Masonry Association. Sa Sheets:

"Since radioactive fallout is the principal concern of those living outside the Portland and Klamath Fa target areas, the cheapest and most effective means of surviving its ravages is by the home fallout shelter. The Unit Masonry Association of Oregon is to be commended for its part in bringing this message home to the people of its state by constructing a shelter in the home of the state's first family, Gov. and Mrs. Mark O. Hatfield.

"The UMA leads by doing and demonstrates how readily such an addition may be assimilated to the everyday routine of a family."

The UMA project was in charge of E. Lyle Parsley, Portland, president of the association. Labor was furnished by bricklayer unions and contractors from Portland and Salem. Materials were supplied by Portland and Salem dealers.

Parsley praised the "fine example being set by Oregon's first family in demonstrating awareness of the need for radiation fallout protection."

Construction of the shelter coincided with the appearance in Salem of a score of Oregon city and county civil defense directors who gathered there for a critique on "Operation Alert 1961."
