WASHINGTON, D.C.-John J. Murphy (left), President of the Bricklayers, Mosons & Plasterers International Union conferred recently with President John F. Kennedy at the White House. They discussed a wide range of subjects dealing with the construction industry and the role of the masonry industry in it. Murphy reported to the President that there are 150,000 union journeyman bricklayers in today's building market and that 12,000 a year are being trained for the future.
Pat Kearns was recently named publicity supervisor in the Sales Promotion Department of Koehring Company. We noticed some pretty effective advertising by Herman L. May & Co., Inc., MCAA member, in the Texas Professional Engineer and Texas Architect.
Co-chairmanning the 1963 MCAA Convention and Educational Trade Show are Mike Coco and Gerard Ryan. The show takes place January 26-30 and exhibitor booths are going very well, reports George Miller, MCAA executive vice president.

Widen Business Horizon: Sign-up For 3rd Management Institute
MCAA members will have another chance to widen their business horizon come October 5th. That's the day the Third Management Institute kicks off for its two-day session.

Skyscrapers Of Glass "On Way Out"
In a talk before a meeting of the National Association of Building Owners and Managers John E. Cahill, president of the Cahill Brothers Construction Corporation, predicted that glass skyscrapers are on the way out. The use of glass in exterior walls is uneconomical because it increases the air conditioning load 100 per cent, Cahill said.
New Offices For CMA
LOS ANGELES, Calif. The Concrete Masonry Association, representing 23 California concrete masonry manufacturers, will move their executive offices to the new Breakers International Hotel at 210 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, California. The move is scheduled for Sept. 15, 1962. The new CMA office is adjacent to the 311 acre site for the 1966-1967 World's Fair.
Elect Johnston President Of Northwest Conference
SEATTLE, WASH. R. L. Johnston, Tacoma, was elected President of the Northwest Conference of Mason Contractor Associations at the groups summer meeting held here aboard the Dominion Monarch, July 24th. Other officers elected were: Kenneth Parker, Portland, Vice President; and Eugene Schreiner, Tacoma, Secretary-Treasurer. (Turn to page 12)
St. Louis Chapter Publishes Cost Index Booklet
ST. LOUIS-The Mason Contractors Association of the Greater St. Louis area will publish a 1962 cost index booklet for masonry construction. The booklet contains sections on recommended uses of masonry building components and sections dealing with walls from 4 to 12 inches. Other divisions are devoted to foundations, concrete block wall sections, glazed tile walls, lightweight blocks, solar screen, and various bonds. The booklet is distributed to advertisers and architects.
Texas Convention Set
The Association Masonry Contractors of Texas will hold their convention August 31 and September 1 at the Sheraton-Dallas in Dallas, Texas, reported the chapter's president, Dee Brown. August 31 will be devoted to a seminar of financial planning. The meeting of September 1st will feature a joint meeting of the manufacturer and supplier. Registration blanks have been mailed to all chapter members for the fourth annual AMCT meeting.
