Manual Handling in Transporting Blocks
For speed handling of this masonry material, the Wallgren firm is using a "fleet" of 36 single-stroke hand lift trucks called Barrett HT. The Barrett HT has a load capacity of 1,000 pounds, more than enough to carry the skidloads of block to the men working on various floors of the 16-story buildings.
Method of Handling
To illustrate the procedure, these kiln-dried materials, already stacked on wooden skids, are placed on the materials hoist by a fork lift truck. Then, a man using a fork lift truck moves the skidloads from the hoist on the proper floor. The skidloads are stockpiled in the middle of each floor. Later the hand lift trucks are used to spot deliver the loads to the masons working along the perimeter of the floor. The blocks are stacked on the skids to a convenient handling height for the workers so that there is a minimum of lost motion in putting the material down. This speeds movement and cuts handling time even more.
A skidload of concrete block is transported along the floor under construction. The small truck has a load capacity of 1000 pounds.

The construction worker uses a Barrett HT hand lift to move a skidload of block off the elevator. Swivel casters on the front end make steering and maneuvering easy. Urethane wheels withstand rugged use in building work. The high lift truck is able to supply the lower three floors with material, stacking the skidloads on the edge, where the hand trucks then transport and stockpile at the center of the floor.
Trucks Prove Economical, Durable
The hand trucks are used four to a building until the loads have been stockpiled and delivered to the masons. Then they are assigned to other buildings, always keeping up with building progress. The 36 trucks are able to serve nine buildings at one time. They are used outdoors and suffer hard wear; in mud, dirt, concrete, dust, and rolled over rough, unfinished floors.

Ivar Anderson says, "With no maintenance at all, these 36 hand lift trucks handled blocks over a six month period. Time studies on the job proved the trucks were an economical method of handling. They did a good job and for this project we couldn't have had anything better."
The Wallgren firm has found that the low priced trucks have almost immediately been repaid in time and labor costs saved through elimination of extra manual handling and stacking of masonry. Breakage and chippage were consequently held to a minimum.
