MILWAUKEE CHAPTER HEARS GLEN COATES
MILWAUKEE, WIS. Glen Coates of Superior Cast Stone Co. was the featured speaker at the March General Membership Meeting of the Mason Contractors Association of Milwaukee held at the Hawley House. Mr. Coates discussed with the group the manufacture and erection of pre-cast panel. President Don Stevens reported that 25 members attended with 6 prospective members as guests. Past President Jack Serdahely was presented with a memento for his services for the years 1960 and 1961.
Wendel Elected President Of Vermiculite Institute
CHANDLER, ARIZONA С. Н. Wendel, Los Angeles, Calif., was elected president of the Vermiculite Institute at the group's 21st annual convention held here during March. Mr. Wendel succeeds L. J. Venard of Minneapolis, Minn. E. R. Murphy, managing director and R. W. Sterrett, treasurer, both of Chicago, were re-elected. J. H. Greer, Houston, Texas, and D. J. Boone, Chicago were named new directors.
The convention of the Institute opened with the reading of a telegram from George A. Miller, executive vice president, Mason Contractors Association of America, extending greetings and best wishes for a successful and productive meeting.
This year's convention is of particular interest because of the emphasis on insulated masonry walls. R. L. Upchurch, chairman of the institute's Insulation Committee, stated the vermiculite industry's promotion last year of water repelent vermiculite was the most extensive ever given a single vermiculite product, and would be stepped-up this year.
Institute members co-operated with allied industries, such as the National Concrete Masonry Assn. in its Horizon Homes promotion, the Mason Contractors Association of America, Portland Cement Assn., and Structural Clay Products Institute. District and regional meetings were held with architects, contractors, and block producers. Masonry fill was advertised in leading consumer and construction magazines. Capitalizing on this umbrella of national advertising, building material dealers tied in on the local level with newspaper mats featuring insulated masonry walls.
The result was that some member companies of the institute reported increases of 50 per cent and better in masonry fill sales, compared with 1960, Upchurch asserted. During the past three years, more than 40 million square feet of masonry walls in schools, telephone buildings, churches, commercial buildings, and homes have been insulated with the fill, he said.
