What Makes An Organization Successful and Profitable?
One of the highlights of the 1963 MCAA Convention was the presentation by Mr. Jack C. Stachle, Vice President, Aldens, Inc. on Management. Due to the many requests for his speech, Masonry is re- printing it here for each of the members to read.
For over 2000 years, students of organization techniques have known what makes organizations successful. Only one element has been added in the last 2000 years.
Management is an Art rather than a Science, requiring the skill of a surgeon and the understanding and patience of a philosopher and an educator.
Every race, nationality, religion, philosophy, etc., has contributed to the Art of Management. This Art of management is used in business, education, politics, religion, military, etc. We should understand this for we must look at all of these areas if we are to be successful. We teach more and more affectively by example than by words. Example instills the desire to learn. This is better than teaching specifics.
When we study and analyze successful organizations, we find that top management and most of the second and line management understand people and know how to motivate others.
As we develop, we find that our environment, the people, and the tempo around us, are a reflection of our thinking and attitude. If our organization, company, department, etc. aren't right, we should step and look into the mirror, as we are the cause. This is logical as we always take all credit when things are right, so when things go wrong it must be our fault.
A successful organization is always the product of an administrator who inspires others to attain a higher level than they would reach of their own accord.
If any of my remarks will be trite and corny this is as it should be, for basic truths are never new all we can hope to do is to present them in a new light.
An organization, good or bad, reflects like a mirror, the thinking and action of the individual at the top. The public holds in highest esteem and respect the individual who respects his work or profession. Human relations is a way of life a matter of doing what is right every minute of every day and not some thing that is practiced only during certain hours of the day.
In view of what I have already said, it is obvious that my subject boils down to YOU. If your mental attitude is right, you will have a successful organization. If you have the wrong mental attitude, then there is no method or plan that will produce a successful organization. Battles and companies have been saved by a change in the leader. All other factors remained the same. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Personality will never go out of Fashion". If you expect gimmicks in my talk-stop listening right now I have not included any.
Since your entire organization reflects your attitude, we should stop at this time and recognize all the things that we as Business-men have to be proud of. Unless we are proud of what we are doing, we can never motivate or lift the sights of our organization.
I'm glad that I am a Business-man as-
1. It gives me the opportunity to use my ability
2. It gives me the opportunity to travel
3. It gives me the opportunity to make many friends
4. It gives me the opportunity to be of service
