Soil Compactor

A gasoline powered portable soil compactor that weighs only 100 pounds yet delivers 540-600 solid 1,500 pound blows per minute has just been announced by Champion Manufacturing Company of St. Louis, Missouri. Called the "Champ-Pak", the unit is powered by a 4 horsepower, heavy duty, industrial type, 2 cycle, Jacobsen engine the only engine specially modified for long life under the stress of compacting blows.

As a safety feature, the gas tank is positioned at the front of the unit, away from the operator. One man can easily lift a Champ-Pak and carry it about on his shoulder.

A foot kick plate makes the unit easy to push and guide. A ski-type shoe design creates an exclusive "pre-tamp" feature and lets the unit move easily through high lifts of loose dirt. A hole in the front of the shoe makes it easy to pull the unit through specially high lifts or up steep banks.

Springs of special patented steel (easily and inexpensively replaced) absorb all shock for the operator. When a Champ-Pak is turned loose on level ground, it "dances" on the spot due to built-in balance. Maintenance is reduced to a level never before available in a compactor. hamp-Paks average 90 days operation between maintenance other than minor items such as carbon removal and spark plug adjustment. Carbon removal, carburetor adjustment, spring replacement and air cleaner removal are all done quickly and easily. An automatic lubrication system feeds all parts requiring oil for 8 hours.

For illustrated literature and the name of your nearest Champion Champ-Pak dealer, write Champion Manufacturing Company, 3700 Forest Park Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63108.

Scaffold Hoist

Universal Manufacturing Corporation of Zelienople, Pennsylvania, announces a new kind of scaffold hoist system which will carry a 750 lb. load to any height, then swivel 180 degrees to place the load squarely on a builder's work platform.

Universal's "Scaf O Matic" Hoist is designed to eliminate the need for any workman to step off his work platform on to the lift platform, or even to lean over.

A simple hand lever swings the lift platform or cage to the center of the work platform in complete safety and with materials positioned for immediate use.

The complete assembly, which can be set up in about half-an-hour, includes the tubular steel tower, platform or cage, hoist, blocking member, most base and cathead. The entire assembly is dichromate galvanized and can be supplied painted for easy spotting on large jobs.

The tower consists of 612-foot mast sections. It can be set up all at once or with the scaffolding, its height limited only by the height of the scaffolding itself. The base contains the bottom sheave assembly and the cathead is built not to sag under the heaviest loads. The cathead fits any mast section and can be used on a tower of any height.

The platform or cage is of cantilevered construction. It rides level and has pockets for an optional guard rail.

The hoist, designed by Universal, has a four-cycle, nine hp, air-cooled Briggs and Stratton gasoline engine and heavy-duty drum with cable capacity for any tower height. One hundred and fifty feet of 5/16 inch, 6 x 7 IPS steel cable is supplied. The hoist uses SKF thrust bearings and a friction type brake and clutch.

As an optional feature, Universal also supplies the assembly with a choice of three electric motors: 110-220 volt single phase or 220-440 volt three-phase A. C. and 115-230 volt D. C.

The specially designed blocking member eliminates the usual wood blocking. It positions the hoist parallel to the scaffold run. 14 feet from the mast base, thus keeps the operator from being underneath the load.

Further information on the Scaf-O-Matic Hoist is available from the Universal Manufacturing Corporation, Zelienople, Pennsylvania.
