Select Brick For New Manhattan Privately-Owned Nursing Home

Ground will be broken late next month for a 500 bed, privately-owned nursing home in Manhattan's East Seventies. The seventeen story building, to be erected at 207-213 East 79th Street, will utilize grey glazed brick accented with blue terra cotta spandrels. Blue granite will be used to face the lobby entrance.

The projected institution, to be known as The De Witt Nursing Home, will not only be the largest privately-owned nursing home in the world but probably the most luxurious as well. Final plans for the structure, drawn by the New York architectural firm of Wechsler & Schimenti, show that the building will have an audio-visual call system, closed circuit TV, a paging system which can also be used to pipe music, central air conditioning and an interior vacuum cleaner system.

Although precast concrete was originally chosen for the structure, Wechsler & Schimenti substituted brick when they found it to be considerably less expensive. Other factors influencing their choice of material were the ability of brick to blend in with the surrounding buildings and the wide color range.

More and more architects are going back to brick, according to Joseph Holme, president of the Metropolitan Brick Masonry Council, as they realize its cost advantage over competitive materials.

Mechanical engineers for the De Witt Nursing Home are Bernard Greene & Associates while the structural engineering work is being handled by Abrahams, Herzburg and Cantor. George F. Driscoll Co. are general contractors.
