Construction Office Administration by George E. Deatherage, P.E., George E. Deatherage & Son, Construction Consultants, Satsuma, Florida. 303 pages plus index, 126 illustrations) 7% x 978; McGraw-Hill: $1350. Publication date: November, 1964.
"Construction Office Administration" is a detailed and complete treatment of all the functions needed for the effective and efficient operation of a construction company office. All aspects common to general office management as well as those areas peculiar to construction company offices are thoroughly outlined. Mr. Deatherage presents the information in such a manner that it can be immediately extracted and used without the necessity of researching for added data to make the coverage complete.
The book is divided into 11 chapters. Chapter 1 considers contractors' bonds. Chapter 2 outlines necessary insurance policies with particular attention to the so-called fine print. Workmen's compensation and social security on a national and statewide basis are covered in Chapter 3, while mechanics' lien laws and occupational classifications are thoroughly covered in Chapter 4.
The next chapter takes up building procedures and practices, while Chapter 6 covers contractors' license laws. Chapter 7 details office engineering with applications to small and large staff, and Chapter 8 considers cost control and accounts. There follows a chapter outlining methods of cost engineering and analysis.
Chapter 10 gives basic fundamentals of bookkeeping and accounting as applied to a construction firm. Clerical functions needed for efficient operation of the construction office are discussed in the final chapter.
Special features of "Construction Office Administration" are the complete reproductions of various types of bonds and insurance policies, and detailed coverage of mechanics' liens and contractors' license laws, and the finer details of practical cost keeping. The data on occupational classifications appear for the first time in any text of this kind.
McGraw-Hill is publishing three additional books by Mr. Deatherage during the next six months: "Construction Company Organization and Management," "Estimating and Job Preplanning," and "Construction Scheduling and Control."
