Queens College Chooses Glazed Brick
Queens College will add a new $7,500,000 building consisting of two new wings and a tower to handle the ever increasing number of students who will matriculate at the college level in years to come.
Ground will be broken in the near future for Queen College Academic Building number 2 located at Kassenal Blvd. and the Long Island Expressway in Queens. The building will consist of two wings and a tower, the two wings will be of different levels, one two stories high and the other three. Both wings will have full ground-floor levels. These will be utilized as lecture rooms in one and an art department in the other. These wings will provide much needed up-to-date classroom space for the ever growing number of high school graduates that want to go to college but can't because of present limitations in academic facilities.
The classrooms have the latest teaching aids available to date, including closed circuit television, and viewing screens in back of each of the rooms for slides and motion pictures. There is a language laboratory where automated machines and other aids will be used in the teaching of languages. There are six auditoriums in the new building, two large ones that will hold three hundred people each and four smaller ones that will hold one hundred people each. The two large auditoriums are equipped with the latest in rear screen projection equipment.
The tower will be the tallest structure and focal point of the campus and will be used for administrative purposes. Final plans for the building were drawn by the New York architectural firm of Moore and Hutchins and show the facade to be of white glazed brick. Mr. Arthur Costello project chief for Moore and Hutchins, stated that white glazed brick was chosen because it was more modern than red brick and it matched the surrounding structure on campus. Brick was also chosen because of its low heat gain and loss, beauty, easy maintenance and for its neat business like appearance. More and more architects are using brick according to Joseph Holme, president of the Metropolitan Brick Masonry Council, as they realize its cost advantage over competitive materials.
Structural Engineers for the project are Edward and Hjorth. The Mechanical Engineering will be done by the firm of Meyer Strong and Jones.
