MASONRY March, 1966

Insurance Committee Report
By Charles Danna, Jr., Chairman
Walter Derk, Consultant

During the year just ended, Group Insurance services extended to MCAA members and their families were considerably broadened.

# GROUP ACCIDENT INSURANCE
On Decebmer 1, 1964, the total premium developed under the old $1,000 Accident program jumped from under $800 to $11,000, simply because more coverage was offered. A year later it went up to $18,000, and even this does not represent anything like full participation.

This pattern clearly indicates that those people who take time to read the material mailed to them, and then decide to take advantage of the opportunity, do so remarkably well; a good many members are now insured for $100,000 instead of $1,000. There is every expectation that this program will continue to grow. If you have not looked into it, we urge that you do so now.

The plan has become big enough to make practical use of IBM equipment to process renewals and changes each year. This should happily eliminate previous delays in issuing new certificates to each employee. In the future, these will be mailed no later than December to those individuals who are added or changed. Otherwise, the certificates remain in force upon payment of the annual premium.

A number of claims have been reported, of course, including payments of: $1,000 in Portland, because a wife was killed in an auto accident; $500 in Fort Worth, for a foot which was amputated because of an auto accident. There are open claims pending now in: Beaumont because of a fall; in Richmond for a fractured foot. One member inquired about an old injury which was not reported before but he apparently decided against putting in a claim. He has since increased his coverage limits. Another person in Beaumont injured his back and incurred medical expense; the claim is being processed now. The newest cases are in Phoenix, another back injury and in Rhode Island, for a child who was injured. Claim forms have been mailed to both for completion.

# HOSPITAL MONEY PLAN
One of our purposes in having insurance people at the convention was to promote MCAA's Hospital Money Plan underwritten by the Fund-American Insurance Group. This is a brand new and rather exclusive plan of which we are justifiably proud. It took a lot of work to accomplish.

Administration will be simple and payments liberal. It will appeal both to those people who already have Blue Cross or some other form of coverage and those who do not.

Any help you can give us in getting this Group program off the ground will be most appreciated. We hope to make coverage effective May 1, provided a sufficient number of applications are completed in time.

# VARIABLE PENSION PLAN
After much investigation and study, MCAA recently endorsed the Bankers National Life Insurance Company/ Scudder, Stevens & Clark Variable Pension Plan. As the name implies, this program is highly variable, requiring individual contact with each member firm and its eligible employees.

The big job is now underway, with enthusiastic support being reported right from the start. Some 18 individual plans were being processed as of January 31, plus 33 member-firms arranging for Qualified Pension Plans for their employees with IRS approval. The latter take a bit longer to finish, of course.

Anyone wishing to have this program explained in the near future should contact Fred S. James & Co. immediately.

Any questions, claims or requests for forms should be directed to Walter Derk at Fred S. James & Co. who will coordinate all of the MCAA's insurance programs.
