Cleveland Names Nemec President

The Cleveland Chapter of MCAA met in mid-January to elect officers the new year and named H. R. Nemec as its president.

Mr. Nemec, president of the Cleveland-based Nemec & Root Construction Co., is an active figure in that Ohio city's construction industry. Aside from that role with that MCAA chapter, Mr. Nemec is chief labor negotiator for the masonry contractors in the Greater Cleveland area.

Over 25 masonry contractor companies were represented at the meeting, held at the Pick-Carter Hotel in Cleveland. This represents about 50 percent of the Cleveland chapter membership.

Hugh Farmer, Paugh & Farmer, Inc., masonry contractor representative to the Bricklayer Joint Apprenticeship Committee, reported that apprenticeship enrollment in the Cleveland area has declined over the past several years. He stated that there are now 48 bricklayer apprentices in Cleveland compared to 53 in 1964 and 64 in 1963.

The members of the MCAA chapter decided to look into a statewide on-the-job training program sponsored by the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Basically, the program would make available Federal funds to underwrite the cost of apprentice training in the bricklayer trade. Under this program an apprentice coordinator would be appointed who would solicit high school graduates for the bricklayer apprentice program.

Aside from the election of Mr. Nemec as president, other new officers of the Cleveland chapter are: vice president, Stanley West, W. M. West & Son, Inc.; secretary, A. J. P. Martini, The Martini Construction Co.; treasurer, Steve Teresi, Teresi Construction Co. and executive secretary, John A. Hull.

President of the Mason Contractors Association of Cleveland, MCAA Chapter, is H. R. Nemec, left with Stanley West Vice President. Mr. Nemec is President of the firm of Nemec & Root while Mr. West heads the W. M. West & Sons, Inc.

Left to right are: Jake Haditsch, Herb Heasley, Ed Kovacich, Fred Denk and Charles Schultz.

Attending the Annual Meeting of the MCAA of Cleveland were: (1. to r.) John Peternel, Dick McKeon, Ernest Schmidt and Jerry Schenck.

Mr. Nemec was named as delegate to the Cleveland Building Trades Employers Association and will head the arbitration committee for MCAA. The other contractors serving on the collective bargaining committee include R. G. Harley, Thomas Keelin and Messrs. West and Teresi.
