Approximately 300 exhibits did not close until 5:30 P.M., Thursday. The decorator and trucker worked through the night so that MCAA exhibits could be built.
Traveling the longest distance to the meeting were Earl Blackstock, Seattle, and Montie Smallen, Portland. The Canadian delegation this year was by far the largest MCAA ever had. The ladies, too, were coming to the convention in great numbers. This year well over 275 were registered. Our thanks also to Pete Baier, Hobart, Ind., who, as in past conventions, pitched in and made the convention run smoother.
The MCAA Show was the largest ever held. Excellent displays were constructed by B.M. & P.I.U. and the National Concrete Masonry Association. From refreshments to apples to peanuts a whole variety of give aways were available. Our special thanks to each and every exhibitor who made this MCAA's finest show.
Bernard F. Magette has been elected Vice President-Marketing, of the Universal Mfg. Corp., Zelienople, Pa., of its American Tabular Elevator Arrow Bleacher Div. Mr. Magette has been General Sales Manager of Universal since 1958. Monroe Ringis has been appointed Vice President in charge of engineering by Champion Mfg. Co., Alan H. Fleishman, President announced.
A Building Research Advisory Board research symposium devoted to the Performance Concept in Building has been scheduled for March 29-30 in New Orleans. Newly elected president of the New England Masonry Institute is Jim Tobin.
ROBERT TAYLOR RESIGNS
Robert B. Taylor has resigned as director of the Structural Clay Products Research Division of SCPI and William H. Allen has been named acting director.
Taylor will become executive vice president of Mapleton Development, Inc., Canton, Ohio. Mr. Taylor joined the research group when it was established in 1950.
JULIE SZABO ON TV
Julie Anne Szabo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Szabo, recently appeared on the T. V. quiz program, "It's Academic." Julie, a senior at Maine Township High School West, Des Plaines, Illinois, participated on a panel with Edward Nichols and Colin Baenziger, also seniors at Maine West. "It's Academic," NBC, channel 5, Chicago, Ill., is a program designed to test the all-around knowledge of students on three competing teams. On the first program, televised on Nov. 18, 1965, competing against teams from Dwight D. Eisenhower High School of Blue Island and Josephenum High School of Chicago, the Maine West team won $100 savings bond for its school. By winning the first game, the team qualified for a play-off game which was televised on Dec. 11, 1965 against teams from West Aurora and Evergreen Park high schools. West Aurora won this contest and Maine received a $25 savings bond for the school. Recently, Julie also received notification that she is a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program which places her in the upper one-half of all the seniors throughout the nation.
Reorganized Facing Tile Group
An important series of meetings of the leading U.S. manufacturers of ceramic glazed and natural finish structural ceramic glazed facing tile has resulted in the reorganization and rejuvenation of the Facing Tile Institute and the approval of plans for an expanded promotional program for the group. Representing approximately 80 per cent of all glazed ware production in the country, the newly organized trade association includes both new and old members on its roster.
Serving as President of the Facing Tile Institute is J. H. Stewart. Jr. of Stark Ceramics, Inc., Canton, Ohio. New Executive Secretary of the group is John M. Aldworth who will direct operation of the Institute's Chicago headquarters within the offices of Smith, Bucklin & Associates, nationally-known trade association management firm.
