Portland Honors Apprentices
The Mason Contractors Association of Portland, Ore., recently honored those in the industry contributing to the success of the apprentice training program in that area. At a special Christmas breakfast bricklayer apprentices, mason contractors and the many who assist the program were guests of the Association. Featured speaker was J. Burke Williamson, Manager of the Industrial Development Department, Portland Chamber of Commerce, who gave an informative presentation on the future expansion of the community. The Christmas Breakfast has become a tradition since its inauguration in 1954.

West Brothers Brick Co. have already made the loan of half a warehouse, an office and about two acres of land for the classroom and shop. In the future, it is hoped a fund, jointly contributed to by labor and management, could be established to keep the training program on a continuous basis.
Under the chairmanship of Ray Sutherland, D. C. Council Business Manager, a Laborers-Plasterers-Masonry-Contractors Training committee has been formed to choose the instructors, influence the nature of the curriculum and pass on applicants for training.

An advisory committee will assist the Training Committee: Edward C. Wroth, Executive Director, Masonry Institute; Thomas Calloway. International Representative, LIU; Robert L. Glenn, Assistant Business Manager, Laborers District Council: Anthony J. Izzo, Jr., President A. J. Izzo, Jr. Co.; William Ponton, President, Anchor Associates, Inc.; Jim Lertoria, Rubino & Ferris Plasterers. Willie E. Tindal has been named site manager.

NADD Selects Stellrecht
George Stellrecht, President of the John H. Black Co., a major distributor of brick and tile in the Buffalo area, has been elected President of the National Association of Distributors and Dealers of Structural Clay Products. Others elected are: George S. Hays, Vice President; Howard Dudding, Treasurer and George Pearson, Secretary. Durwood Boeglen, Washington, D.C. was elected to the group's Board of Directors.

The directory lists 550 plant locations, regional manufacturing associations, and shows national marketing divisions.

Safety Facts
In Ontario every "legally qualified medical practitioner" must report to the proper authorities every person under his care suffering from any condition, which in his opinion renders it dangerous for the patient to drive.
Iceland proposes to follow Sweden in switching to driving on the right in 1968. England and Ireland are the only European countries now maintaining driving on the left.
A Department of Justice Survey indicates that 18.2 per cent of all stolen cars are later involved in crashes and that 60 per cent of them are left unlocked or with keys in the ignitions. About 500,000 were stolen last year.
REENE APPOINTED
Charles W. Reene has been named vice president for administration of the Portland Cement Association. He also will continue as secretary of the Association, a position he has held since August 1966.
Previously Reene had served for four years in Washington, D.C., as special assistant to the president of the Association.
Prior to his tenure in Washington, Reene served six years as director of educational services for the Association in Chicago, following three years as advertising manager of the Hough Manufacturing Corp., Janesville, Wis., and four years as assistant to the manager of the PCA's advertising bureau. During World War II, he was an infantry officer in the European theater.
Reene holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in advertising and communications from the University of Illinois. He also completed two years of engineering study at Purdue University and at Queens College in New York City.
