CANADIAN NEWS
"The need for a unified national voice to protect the interests of Masonry Contractors throughout Canada at the national level has never been greater than today" said President Eugene George, Kitchener, Ont., of the Canadian Masonry Contractors' Association in an address to the Masonry Contractors Association of British Columbia at the Bayshore Inn, Vancouver, on May 31, 1968.
"The masonry contractor as a specialist sub-trade in the construction industry in Canada has now reached the point where his position in the industry is being generally recognized," President George continued.
"Masonry contractors in the United States have been supporting a national association for twenty years to protect and promote their interests and in Canada a number of regional and local associations have now been operating for some years. In fact, the benefits of the American association have been such that leading Canadian masonry contractors found its support of value and joined it."
"The federal government gave the CMCA its recognition last January when the Minister of Puble Works, Hon. George J. McIlbraith, addressed the Founding Convention in Ottawa."
"The initial programs to be tackled include all-weather programing of work, the promotion of trade training and educational courses, the development of a national group insurance plan and a close watch on federal developments in the legislative fields. Promotional, technical and informational services will also be important features of the young organization's activities.
"Finally, as the successful founding convention has already indicated, masonry contractors organizations at the regional level have much to learn from each other. They will undoubtedly gain from a nationally co-ordinated program for the exchange of information," President George concluded.
