economical partitions to reduce sound transmission between hotel, motel, and apartment units."

T. F. Peifer, chairman of the concrete and roofing committee, discussed a new "sandwich" design in roof decks that is finding good acceptance from architects and engineers and is particularly adapted for use on pre-cast and structural concrete decks. It consists of a combination of grooved polystyrene board and vermiculite concrete. The board is covered on its top and bottom surfaces with a permeable facing and is placed in a thin slurry of vermiculite concrete. The grooved channels allow vapor to escape to the venting system. Vermiculite insulating concrete from two to six inches thick is placed over the top of the board to provide slope to drains, as well as insulation.

The system can also be used for repairing existing dead level roofs economically, Peifer said. The old roof need not be torn off and wasted. The board is simply laid over the old membrane, which saves the expense of hauling and disposing of the old material. On a 35,000 sq. ft. deck, two inches of insulation plus the roofing membrane and gravel represents about 9,000 cu. ft. of debris that must be removed and disposed of, Peifer said.

T. W. Pickthall of San Francisco, Cal., was elected president to succeed Moran, and three directors were named. They are C. R. Babb of Zonolite Division W. R. Grace & Co., Chicago: N. F. Bushell of Grant Industries, Vancouver, B. C.; and C. E. Conry of International Vermiculite Co. at Girard, III.

L. A. Barron was retained as managing director; D. J. Boone, as treasurer.

Guest speakers included Earl F. Bennett, president of Producers' Council; F. J. Mardulier, president of the American Society for Testing and Materials, and Wm. H. Gove, well-known sales consultant.

Bennett discussed "The Systems Approach to Tomorrow's Building," and urged the importance of lead time in working with designers of construction systems that will be used in the 1970's.

"You must get into the system when it is being developed," he said. "Make that architect, engineer, or designer aware of your product, what it will do, and where it fits, before he gets a commission for a project. If your product is left out of a system, you may not have a chance for years to get it included."

The convention ended with the annual banquet.
