UNION CARBIDE MOVES LABS
Union Carbide announced today that it has just completed a move of its Cement and Concrete Chemicals Laboratory to Tarrytown, N. Y. Formerly located in both Tarrytown, N.Y. and South Charleston, W. Va., the facility is now consolidated within the Union Carbide Tarrytown Technical Center.
The increased use of concrete in construction during recent years has created a demand for new products that will improve cement manufacture and concrete production. By moving to Tarrytown where the company has extensive research and development facilities, the consolidated laboratory can participate more effectively in basic research.
The laboratory will be concerned principally with (1) testing new products, (2) searching for new applications of existing materials, and (3) providing customer service. Among the more interesting projects in advanced stages of development are: new water-reducing admixtures; a concrete dissolver; a midifier for cement mortars; new packaging techniques for cement; new admixture-dispensing equipment; and new techniques with infrared spectrophotometry.
Although there is increasing emphasis on research by the Cement and Concrete Chemicals Laboratory, the company says that customer technical service remains as one of the most important activities. Whenever a Union Carbide technical representative encounters a problem at a customer plant or project, for example, that cannot be solved through routine field analysis, the laboratory can conduct a more detailed examination. Using samples of cement, sand, and aggregates from the customer plant, technicians can isolate the cause and recommend corrective measures.
