Service & Safety Tips
(Continued from page 53)
Be sure the load is properly within the throat opening of the hooks.

Never bounce or jerk the load when lowering or lifting.

Shield links from contact with sharp corners of the load with pads. Sharp edges can chisel the best of chain, and cause stress, distortion and wear.

Modern chains are stronger, lighter and better designed than ever before. New alloys and welding techniques improve chain safety and versatility. But inspection and maintenance on the job are still necessary to get the most service and safety out of your sling chains.

State fund rather than a private insurance carrier, particularly if the bulk of your operations are performed elsewhere. These benefit levels are so high that they're apt to wreck your overall insurance loss experience record. We can furnish more details to interested members upon request.

Question:
What's the difference between Uninsured Motorist and Family Protection insurance as afforded by most Automobile Liability Policies?

Answer:
None. These both refer to a now largely compulsory form of protection designed to compensate the policyholder or occupant of his car for bodily injury caused by a third party who is uninsured or unable to meet his obligations. This would also apply to a hit and run situation. Their idea is to pay the policyholder for damages, including pain and suffering, to approximately the same extent he would recover if the other party had been insured. Note that in the vast majority of cases this does not extend to damage to the car, which is presently insurable via collision coverage.

In most jurisdictions this coverage is limited to a maximum recovery of $10,000 per person and $20,000 per accident, regardless of the number of occupants who might have been hurt.

This might at present be considered a stop-gap remedy since the entire automobile liability claim payment structure is under study, with the idea of improving the speed of settling claim disputes without forever increasing premium costs which threaten to go out of sight.

Release Case Study
How brick bearing walls saved an owner $3 per square foot on a 7-story office building is told in a new publication from the Structural Clay Products Institute. The 4-page "Case Study" shows building and design details of new thin-walled brick bearing wall construction. (Copies may be obtained without charge by writing the Institute at 1750 Old Meadow Road, McLean, Virginia 22101.)

Nearly three months were cut from the construction schedule by this type of construction as opposed to structural frame. (This means some $53,000 in extra rental income for the owner.) Actual construction savings were estimated at $2 per square foot, and an additional $1 psf was saved in interim financing.

Another important advantage is the cash disbursal schedule. Instead of immediately paying out 30% of building cost for structural frame, bearing wall allows an even cash flow.

Clean spans of 37' 10" provide great interior flexibility. "This proves that bearing wall construction is not limited to cellular-type structures such as apartments", says SCPI Executive Director R. W. Otterson.
