43 Attend St. Louis Tour MCAA Holds Fall Board Meeting
The Mason Contractors Association of St. Louis hosted 43 Architects and Engineers on a three-day inspection tour of Contemporary Load Bearing Masonry Wall projects in the Pittsburgh, Pa., area on Nov. 18-20. Heading the St. Louis delegation was Chapter President Robert Sloss who in conjunction with other Industry groups worked out a smooth and efficient tour schedule.
Speakers during the sessions were James Gross, SCPI, and Kevin Callahan, NCMA.
Congratulations to our St. Louis Chapter for an excellent production. Our thanks to Donald Harris, Corkie Cost, Mike Coco and all the Pittsburgh Chapter members who assisted.

William J. Young, President of Lehigh Portland Cement Co., Allentown, Pa., has been elected Chairman of the Board of the Portland Cement Association. He succeeds Ellery Sedwick, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Medusa Portland Cement Co., Cleveland... Carroll G. Turk has been appointed Director Marketing for MF Industrial and Construction Machinery, Akron, O. The election of L. James Wade, Jr. as Chairman of the Board, and C A. Raper as President, General Portland Cement Co., was announced following a meeting of the Board recently in Dallas.
Donald Bidwell, MCAA President, calls the Executive Board into session at the Caribe Hilton Hotel, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
MCAA held its Fall Executive Board Meeting on Saturday, October 25th, at the Caribe Hilton Hotel, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Full reports were heard from officers and committee chairmen. Featured speaker at the meeting was John Wm. Chapman, Jr., Deputy Administrator, General Services Administration, Washington, D.C. MCAA Treasurer, David Soloff, Jr., presented the yearly audit as prepared by the firm of Harris, Kerr, Forster & Company. After reviewing the various exhibits, the audit was unanimousily accepted by the Board.
The Education Committee Chairman, Robert Harrison, advised the Board that with the 49 persons attending the recent St. Louis Course a grand total of 1,011 persons had participated in these sessions during the past three years. (Since the Board Meeting another course had been held in Banff, Alberta, Canada, with 43 persons attending, bringing the total to 1,054).
The All-Weather Committee Co-Chairmen Charles Velardo and Eugene George reported on the progress being made by that Industry group. A recommended practice is in its final stage of preparation and a new cold weather specification is being developed.
The Nominating Committee advised that it had met on Friday, October 24th, and it presented to the Executive Board a slate of officers for consideration at the Annual Meeting in February. These were accepted and in acordance with the Constitution & By-Laws members would be advised by special notice.
The Board reconvened at the Estate Carlton on Tuesday morning and heard reports from the Research Committee. A special report was made to the Board by Robert Rawlins, Pittsburgh Corning Corporation, on the use of new glass units.
CMCA Estimating Course
BANFF-Forty-three mason contractors from various sections of Canada attended the Masonry Estimating Course held by the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association in conjunction with MCAA on October 14 & 15. This brings the total number who have attended this course to 1,054.
The next Masonry Estimating Course will be held at Hershey, Pa. on January 23 & 24. Full details on this meeting can be secured by writing MCAA Executive Office.
