Dewey Comes Through
"It could have been a disaster," said D. Cameron Bradley, president of Dewey Portland Cement Co., referring to the flooding of the company's St. Paul, Minn., terminal facility in April. "Yet we didn't miss one delivery date to a local customer."
Dewey's terminal had to be shut down during the third highest flood level ever recorded for the Mississippi River. Water rose to 5½ feet over the truck loading scale.
Cameron credited the foresight, enormous amount of planning and preparatory work on the part of his terminal and operations people and the cooperation of the carriers for the result in meeting delivery schedules.
Realizing the terminal couldn't operate during the flood, Dewey personnel arranged for railroad hopper cars on a siding in suburban Savage, Minn., to serve as temporary storage. As flood waters rose, operations moved to the siding. The hopper cars were unloaded into trucks for local delivery. The flood crested at the plant April 26 at 18.5 feet, only 3.5 feet below the record of 1965. Three days after waters had receded, the terminal was back in full operation.
The terminal plant was protected by adding to dikes built in 1965 around the plant, sealing off tunnels with electrical conduits and additions to pumps and material for building or repairing dikes.
