LIU Installs Computer
The General Executive Board of the Laborers International Union has authorized the installation of a leased IBM 360-25 computer at its headquarters to facilitate many of the functions of the International and improve services in the field.
Programs are being prepared for the checking, accounting and mailing list functions of the International and are currently being placed on the computer, it was announced.

Congratulations to Pat and Eugene George on the arrival of their seventh child-a bouncing 6 pound 10 ounce boy on Tues., March 17th. This is their seventh boy and he arrived just in time to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and his Mother's Birthday. Our sincerest thanks to Beverely Harrison and all the Ladies who worked so hard during our recent convention. Hold Conference On Masonry Structures
Appoint Beveridge
W. R. Grace & Co.'s Construction Products Division, Cambridge, Mass., has named J. Nelson Beveridge marketing manager for Zonolite products. Beveridge spent 10 years with Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp., where he variously served as sales manager for pre-engineered buildings; product manager for acoustical materials; market research manager, and architectural representative.
He joins W. R. Grace from a position as manager of industrialized buildings for U. S. Plywood-Champion Papers, Inc. Zonolite markets lightweight aggregates for plaster and concrete; insulation products for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings; and spray-fireproofing materials.
Wage Rates Advance
Union wage rates for building trades workers averaged $5.54 an hour on July 1, 1969, up 8.3% over the previous year, according to an annual survey by the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. It was the largest annual increase since the 10.6% recorded for 1947-48.
Hourly wage rates on July 1, 1969, averaged $5.87 for journeymen (8.4% higher than in 1968) and $4.33 for laborers and helpers (7.6% higher than the year before). The survey covered cities with 100,000 population or more.
Set New York Meeting
Architects, engineers, contractors, educators, and technicians gather in New York City's New York Hilton Hotel. April 11-17, 1970, for the American Concrete Institute's Annual Convention. The purpose of the meeting is to air the latest information on concrete and reinforced concrete.
According to Joseph J. Shideler, ACI President, "eight program sessions are scheduled, covering subject matter ranging from structural theory to job techniques and from architectural esthetics to basic research."
The National Conference on the Performance of Masonry Structures was held on March 16-18 at the National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg. Md., with over 400 persons in attendance.
Thirty-four speakers in 11 sessions over three days covered a broad range of subjects relative to masonry construction. Highlights of the meeting were the sessions on "Construction" and "Park Lane Towers, Denver, Colo."
During the "Construction" session Eugene George, MCAA Regional Vice President, discussed, in depth, the Masonry Industry All-Weather Program and reviewed with the audience various successful enclosure techniques used in Canada. David L. Shepersky, La Mesa, Calif., presented a practical paper on high-rise load bearing masonry structures. Construction procedures and coordination methods were described.
Dan Berich, MCAA Colorado Chapter Member, gave a visual presentation on the construction of Park Lane Towers, Denver. It was excellent (Continued on page 37)
Seattle Hosts Region F
Region F held their Annual Regional Conference on Feb. 27-28 at the Washington Plaza Hotel, Seattle, Washington. With each of the Chapters in the region being represented they were treated to an excellent convention program. On Friday, they heard Robert Hopkins, President of NCMA; Roscoe H. Burts, Regional Director, U.S. Dept. of Labor; Edgar Gill and Rowland S. Rose, Consulting Engineer. Then on Saturday the program included the following: Leonard Thompson, Director Masonry Research; Fred Bassetti, FAIA; Gerald T. Young, U.S. Lime/Flintkote Div.; Richard Bleil, Canadian Refractories and George A. Miller.
Rounding out the program was an enjoyable banquet and dinner dance in the grand ballroom. Presiding at the various sessions were G. Earl Blackstock, MCAA Regional Vice President; William L. Hensen, Jr., President, Seattle MCAA Chapter; Robert F. Raymond, President Oregon State Chapter and Lowell Bass, Conference Chairman.
