spoke briefly on the importance of the development of an effective promotion program for the masonry industry.
The program closed at 3:30 p.m. to allow time to tour the Exhibit Hall, which remained open to 7:30 p.m.
The opening session on Monday morning featured the presentation of colors by a U.S. Marine Color Guard, officially launching the convention. Presiding at the impressive ceremony was MCAA President Allen Young.
Following the invocation by Dr. E. Leo Allen, Pastor of the Park Place United Methodist Church, Houston, welcome addresses were given by G. W. Veazey, Jr., Convention Chairman, and Cecil Barker, President of the Associated Masonry Contractors of Houston.
These brief remarks were followed by President Allen Young reporting on the activities of the Association during the past year.
Andy Meyer, NASA Manned Space Center discussed "Advanced Studies Beyond Apollo 18." Mr. Meyer presented information on the Space Station and various proposed Space Shuttles in addition to other projects planned for the future. In a question and answer session concerning the value of these efforts he pointed out that "these dollars are being spent here on earth, generating goods and services which are being returned directly into the economy". More than 90 percent of NASA's funds have been spent among more than 20,000 business and industrial firms, and in colleges and universities, in every state and the District of Columbia. Briefly he summarized some of the value for medical purposes, weather and earthquake forecasting, educational, as well as, in the communications field.
One of the most moving lectures at the convention was delivered that morning by Dr. Murray Banks, Miami, Fla., who spoke on "What To Do Until the Psychiatrist Arrives." Spiced with humor, his down-to-earth and practical philosophy stressed the importance of maintaining positive mental attitudes about personal and business problems, and cultivating a strong sense of humor.
