A radical departure in school planning when it was commissioned in 1940 to be a "warm, personal and intimate school," Crow Island School of Winnetka, III. has been honored with the 1971 American Institute of Architects' 25-Year Award.
The award is restricted to structures at least 25 years old, in recognition of "architectural design of enduring significance." It was given once previously, in 1969, to Rockefeller Center in New York City.
Ten years ago, on its 15th anniversary, Crow Island School was rated by 50 architects and scholars as 12th among all buildings. In Architectural Record's poll at that time to select the "most significant building in the past 100 years of architecture in America," it was rated first among all school structures.
A quarter-century ago, Winnetka School Superintendent Carleton Washburne and his staff wanted an elementary school "which permits the joy in small things of life, and in democratic living." They commissioned the project to the architectural firm of Perkins, Wheeler & Will (now the Perkins & Will Corporation) and Eliel and Eero Saarinen.
Commenting about Crow Island, Lawrence B. Perkins, who heads the Perkins & Will Corp., said: "Educational expression has more to do with designing schools than materials and fashions. Crow Island could easily have been built in 1910, had the educators in the period wanted such a school.
"Crow Island is neither a building venture nor an astonishing feat of construction. Rather, it is the outcome of the philosophy of taking relatively common materials and arranging them so they are socially acceptable for the activities of the children and teachers."
The mason contractor for Crow Island School was Coath. & Goss, Inc., now a general contractor in Elmhurst, III. BM & PIU's Local 21 in Chicago provided the masons for the award-winning structure. (Cover photo by Hedrich-Blessing, Chicago.)
