Glass blocks are used for various purposes, including decoration, insulation, and control of light and airflow while admitting light. The original purpose of the glass block at the Wheeling New Agency was to provide a decorative facade for the public. Has it worked? "We've received numerous compliments from pedestrians who like the block enough to come in and tell us so," said Fred Mosiman, office manager. "Most of them also want to know where they can get more information about the block for their own use."
Huge Concrete Girders Set in Place
A 160-ton pre-cast concrete girder considered to be one of the largest ever used on a building construction project "got off the ground" recently at Pontiac's 13-million dollar Central High School construction project on West Huron and Prall. Two 140-ton cranes with 100-foot booms were required to move the 100-foot beams into place. Another girder of the same size and 12 other smaller beams will be used to span an area occupied by the new school's swimming pool, gymnasium and auditorium. Barton-Malow Company of Detroit is the general contractor. The architect is O'Dell, Hewlett & Luckenbach, Inc., Birmingham, Michigan.
