One of the most unusual masonry projects ever completed in St. Louis is the Washington University Medical Science Building. Incorporating all the internal and external radii built out of radius brick, it consists of six shapes -standard brick external radius headers, internal radius headers, external stretchers, internal stretchers, 6"-long brick and 2"-long brick. They are all laid in garden wall bond, with true headers every third course. The round bays, both visually attractive as well as functional, house all the mechanical equipment supplying the floors, leaving all floor space open.
This excellent project was completed by Roy A. Elam Masonry, Inc. of St. Louis, whose foreman, William Cartlidge, won the AIA Award for best craftsman of the year.
