IMI Continues Its Growth

WASHINGTON, D. C. The capital cities of Georgia and New York State, six major cities in the Northwest, and others are the latest to write support for the International Masonry Institute (IMI) into collective bargaining agreements between mason contractors and the bricklayers' union. The announcement was made by IMI Chairman Donald R. Bidwell, who earlier announced that Chicago and Detroit had negotiated to fund IMI.

IMI was recently established by the Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers International Union (BM&PIU) and the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) as a labor-management promotion trust to encourage quality, masonry construction. Mason contractors and BM&PIU locals in the U.S. and Canada participate through agreements which call for IMI to get le an hour for every hour worked by a member of the BM&PIU.

The Northwest cities joining IMI are: Portland and Eugene, Oregon, and Tacoma, Seattle, Spokane, and Pasco, Washington. In nearby Idaho, the recent BM&PIU Conference Convention delegates voted unanimously to support IMI and to urge each Idaho local to participate, according to L.. Gerald Carlisle, BM&PIU Special Deputy.

Other cities joining IMI are: Butler, Pa., Lawton, Okla., Eau Claire, Wis. and the State of New Hampshire.

The first area to support IMI was Canada's Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

The Albany area agreement covers Local 6 in Albany and: Cohoes Local 8, Troy Local 10, Schenectady Local 16, Amsterdam Local 61, Gloversville Local 67, and Saratoga Local 77. Negotiators for IMI, and a local promotion fund, included: Aldo Malossi, Local 6 President, and James P. McKenna and John J. McManus, Co-chairmen of the Mason Contractors' Negotiation Committee. Funds will be routed via the Eastern New York Construction Employers, Inc., whose Managing Director is Colton D. Harper.

The Atlanta agreement covers Local 8 whose Committee Chairman J. W. Stalling. Business Agent J. C. Dempsey, Lyle L. Lynch, and John L.. Hooper negotiated with I.. L. Gellerstedt, Chairman of the Labor Committee of the Associated General Contractors (AGC), with O. L. Jolly as MCAA Observer.

Norman Joy, Business Agent of Local 6 in Manchester, N.H., and AGC's President Ralph Harper, who is a general and mason contractor, gave leadership to IMI support in New Hampshire with funds routed via James M. Dawson Associates. Involved are Locals 1, 6, 7, 11, and 12.

The Butler, Pa., agreement was worked out by Local 62 President H. M. Wonderly, and officers Albert Albutis, Ralph Mortimer, Frank P. Cain, Cornelius Smith, and Elmer Lewis, with general and mason contractors Ralph Schenk and Cliff Dumbaugh.
