Detroit Presents
(Continued from page 7)
Present in Detroit for the check presentation were: BM&PIU President Thomas F. Murphy, BM&PIU Treasurer John T. Joyce, and IMI Executive Director Neal English, all from Washington, D.C. IMI Chairman Donald Bidwell was on hand from Plymouth, Mich. G. Forte, President of the Masonry Institute of Michigan, presided at the meeting held in the Engineering Society building.
Also participating in the Detroit meeting, planned by John Heslip, Executive Director of the Masonry Institute of Michigan, were: James R. Snyder, Past President of the Detroit MCAA Chapter; Robert Ebeling, Secretary of MCAA; Joseph Chadwick, Secretary, and Roger Vercruysse, Chairman of the Metropolitan Executive Committee of Bricklayers. Louis Weir, BM&PIU Vice President, and George Spencer, Secretary of the Michigan State Conference, and many others representing BM&PIU and MCAA attended.
Forte described the Detroit participation and IMI development as "a milestone in the growth of the masonry industry. The dreams of many mason contractors are being fulfilled," he said. Murphy stated, "We desperately need IMI to promote our industry."
In addition to Detroit and Chicago, a growing number of U.S. and Canadian cities have included IMI in their collective bargaining agreements, are in the process of doing so through amendments, or plan to do so when their new agreements are made this year, according to Bidwell. He said some 40 cities have requested special help to do this from IMI in Washington.
Others may request materials and guidance through: Neal English, Executive Director, IMI, 823 Fifteenth St., N.W., Washington, D. C. 20005.
Bidwell said the addition of Chicago and Detroit to IMI is a major step forward in the development of the masonry industry's promotion program. He anticipates announcing the addition of other major cities soon. In the meantime, he urges local BM&PIU officers along with MCAA and mason contractor groups throughout the U.S. and Canada to take steps now to join the IMI ranks.
AT IMI MEETING were, (left to right front row) James McNeilly of Local 2, Thomas F. Murphy, BM&PIU President, Donald LeMarbe of Local 29; (left to right back row) Joseph Chadwick of Local 2, Carlo Martina of Local 35, Louis Weir, Fifth V.P. of BM&PIU, Roger Vercruysse of Local 26, and John T. Joyce, BM&PIU Treasurer.
