NADD Report

By: Jeffrey L. Brock
Washington, D. C.-NADD member Boren Clay Products Company announces a new representative to the Association and Distributor Sales Manager of Boren Clay Products Company. Lawrence R. Howard was formerly Vice President of Sales for Darlington Brick and Clay Products Company, Pittsburgh.

His 25 years' experience in the brick and clay industry should prove a valuable asset to our industry. His background in sales and marketing are widespread and comes at an appropriate time as the construction industry as a whole is starting an upward swing after several months of declining sales.

Plans for NADD's future growth were of foremost concern when the NADD Board of Directors met on June 22 at the Thunderbird Motor Inn, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the Annual June (19-23) Meetings.

NADD Committee Meetings were held the preceding Monday in preparations for their reports to the Board. Active Committee work is encouraged to ensure a successful review of all NADD programs.

Bricklayer Turns Artist

Bruce D. Corr, a member of Bricklayers Local 2 in Detroit, is swinging an artist's brush these days instead of a trowel, according to "The Building Tradesman" newspaper in Detroit.

It reported that, "One of a long line of brick masons, the 36-year old Corr has set aside the tools of his trade in favor of the easel on a permanent basis. He was seriously injured in 1967."

Bruce, who comes from a family of bricklayers, including his father, William, and late grandfather, had his first art lesson at age 12.

"The Building Tradesman" stated that, "He was a resident of Father Flannagan's Boys' Town in Nebraska at the time. A native of Lansing, Corr finished his high school education there, but not before suffering a serious football injury that left him speechless and partially paralyzed.

"He attended drawing classes at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, as part of therapy and two years later was almost fully recovered. At 18, he was able to start his apprenticeship in the bricklaying trade and attained journeyman status. Bruce started to paint seriously at 21, working summers and attending art school during the winter months."
