Perkins & Will Receives HUD Honor Award
Perkins & Will, one of the nation's largest architectural, engineering and planning firms, was named the recipient of an Honor Award for superior design by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. The award was presented at the recent convention of the American Institute of Planners in Boston.
The Chicago-based firm was honored for service provided to the Operation Breakthrough Site in Kalamazoo, Mich. Three Perkins & Will subsidiaries, SPA/REDCO, Inc., ISD Inc., and P & W Engineers, Inc., also served as consultants on the award-winning project. SPA/REDCO defined market limitations; ISD Inc. prepared site graphics, and P & W Engineers, Inc. served as engineers for the project.

The promotions of Eldon M. Brumbaugh to director of corporate engineering and Ralph D. Lemons to director of financial analysis have been announced by JI Case Co., Racine, Wis. Four major promotions to the executive staff of Marblehead Lime Co., Chicago, have been announced. Maurice D. Henery, formerly vice president of sales, is now senior president of the firm. He is succeeded by James P. Vinke, formerly eastern sales manager. Lloyd B. Robinson moves up from division sales manager to assistant vice president of sales, and Arthur R. GP's Sales Increase
General Portland Inc., the nation's fourth largest producer of cement, continued to post higher sales and net income for both the third quarter and for the nine months ended September 30.
For the September quarter, the Dallas-based cement, furniture retailing and land development company reported an increase of 31% in sales and a net income growth of 15% over the same quarter last year. Sales for the third quarter were $50,695,000 with net income of $3,332,000, compared to $38,679,000 sales and $2,885,000 net income for the same period in 1971.
Meeting Rescheduled
A change in meeting sites and dates for the 17th annual Zonolite roof deck applicators meeting has been announced by Construction Products Division, W. R. Grace & Co. Plans now call for the meeting to be held March 17-20, 1973 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club, Tarpon Springs. Fla.
Brick Manufacturers Increase Production Via Capital Investments
To help meet rising demand for their products, U.S. brick manufacturers are planning extensive capital investments aimed at increasing their yearly production from 8 billion to more than 9 billion units.
The 104 manufacturers, who gathered in Boca Raton, Fla, in October for the 38th annual convention of the Brick Institute of America (BIA), noted that the current upswing in housing and heavy construction had depleted their inventories. An informal survey of manufacturers indicated that capital investments would increase their production capability by at least 10% by next year.
Industry, market research and governmental projections show that demand for brick will increase steadily. According to Richard W. Otterson, BIA executive vice president, to help ensure continued strong demand, BIA plans to advertise brick extensively in trade and consumer publications and (Continued on page 27)
