A Day at the Apple Ranch

Before sunrise on the morning of November 5th, MCAA Board Members and their wives boarded buses at the Casa Blanca Inn, Scottsdale Arizona, for a scenic ride some 150 miles up in the mountains northwest of Phoenix. At the 7,900-foot level with snow on the ground and majestic tall pines providing a backdrop, the ranch of Guy and Mary Apple lay in wait with the warm friendliness of the West.

Greeted at the gate by the Apples riding in a hayrack drawn by a team of beautiful Clydesdales, the Board enjoyed a day of complete relaxation spiced with diversions such as horseback riding, hiking, motorcycle riding, hayrack rides, chess, refreshments, conversation, and a few catnaps in between. The luncheon was excellent, but words cannot describe the delicious barbecued ribs cooked outdoors and soaked with the tangy sauce that can be found only in the West. After savoring the wonderful hospitality of Mary and Guy, the guests boarded the buses for a lively journey back to reality and the Scottsdale area.

Reenacting the recent world chess tournament are Mickey Soloff (right) and Bob Harrison. Mickey smiles like champion Fisher, while Bob sports a Stevenson shoe.
