Architects Bentel & Bentel's design for a brick bank has resulted in a finished structure of outstanding beauty, according to the International Masonry Institute (IMI).
It's the Hempstead Bank Building in Garden City, Long Island, and it is setting a hard-to-follow pace for other buildings scheduled for construction in the newly developing area. Located on Stewart Avenue, the bank with masonry as the major material in its unique design is the first commercial structure to be built on part of the old Mitchel Air Field. The site is destined to become the Nassau County Center.
Why did Bentel & Bentel, AIA, select masonry? "Because brick is better." That's the reason they gave the Metropolitan Brick Masonry Council, whose president is Anthony J. Zotollo. "A dark, textured brick is used extensively on the exterior and throughout the interior of the building," Zotollo said. "The brick helps create a modern, pleasant, strong structure in keeping with the bank's solid image," he pointed out. The building, with underground parking, serves as the executive headquarters of the Hempstead Bank as well as a center for neighborhood banking operations.
