We told you a little bit last issue about how THREADLINE brand adhesive mortar offers substantial savings in construction materials and time. Let's just recap the story of THREADLINE briefly: THREADLINE comes in a self-contained, pre-measured, easy to mix kit. It replaces sand, cement, lime and water. THREADLINE is applied in a toothpaste-thin ribbon, using a standard caulking gun. Production rate, in most cases, doubled. And the thin-bed joint of THREADLINE is stronger than the block it joins.

Here are the few points you should remember when you're working with THREADLINE:

DO
* know your layout and plan ahead
* start work with a level base course
* remember the mix of THREADLINE generates its own heat; this is important in hot or cold weather
* above 65°F, store cement bag and bottle of latex in refrigerated box, place mixed material in caulking guns and store in cool place until ready to use
* hang caulking guns in a box or bucket of ice water in temperature above 70°F to prolong setting time
* below 40°F keep from freezing; store in warm place
* clean guns after each batch and at day's end
* with new caulking gun remove expander-washer until leather becomes soft from use
* keep base courses and layout well ahead of block layers
* remove pressure in caulking guns when you lay them down to prevent THREADLINE waste
* keep blocks clean and free of ice and snow
* keep work area clean and well stocked with blocks; have THREADLINE mixed and ready to go
* plan scaffolding and supply of block because masons use a normally stocked scaffold in half the time with THREADLINE

DON'T
* permit dirt to fall on bed joint; blow off with air or dump cores out while stacking blocks
* skimp on the bead of THREADLINE
* mix a kit just before break, lunch, or at day's end
* move or relay blocks without placing new beads of THREADLINE
* use THREADLINE when it becomes "cheesy" and is beginning to set up

If you follow these simple practices THREADLINE will work for you... saving substantial material and labor costs. If your block supplier doesn't handle THREADLINE, write Don Dirkse, at Amspec Inc., 1880 Mackenzie Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43220, for information about THREADLINE and its availability in your area.

Western States Apprentice Contest

Shown here attired in white shirts and trousers and traditional hard-hats are some of the 25 bricklayer apprentices and seven tile setter apprentices who participated in the 1972 California and Western States apprenticeship contest held recently at the Tanforan Park Shopping Center in San Bruno. First place winner was Terry Sabo of Local 3, Phoenix, with second and third places going to Thomas R. Cooper, Local 11, San Diego, and Rosenda R. Mendoza, Local 22, Santa Ana. The awards were presented by William Ward, chairman of the state bricklayers apprentice committee. Each of the contestants was given a specific diagram or plan to follow. The contest diagram was selected from five different plans by the apprentice committee the night before the event.
