"Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook" by J.E. Amrhein, civil and structural engineer. 8½" x 11" hardbound. 320-pages. Available from Masonry Institute of America, 2550 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, Calif. 90057. $14.00 per copy plus 704 tax for California addresses and 504 for postage and handling.
This authoritative handbook now joins the list of engineering handbooks such as for steel, concrete and timber that engineers refer to for simplification and speed-up of their engineering design. The book contains the theory of masonry design, explanation of design procedures, code requirements based on the Uniform Building Code, and vertical and lateral force design for wind, earth and seismic forces. It includes design examples of a retaining wall, an industrial building and multi-story building. It also includes sections on details and connections, floor systems, typical design problems and partially reinforced systems.
There are over 170 pages of tables and design charts, including interaction diagrams for walls, for ten masonry and two steel strengths, which will facilitate design of any masonry structure. Although this handbook carries the sub-title "Brick and Other Structural Clay Units," it is applicable to all types of masonry, such as concrete block, clay block and combination concrete block and clay brick walls.
The comprehensive manual relieves the designer and engineer of the drudgery of running many calculations. Computations have already been run on a computer and are tabulated or plotted on a graph. The book will speed up masonry design and reduce time required for masonry buildings.
"A Practical Guide to Productivity Measurement" by Leon Greenberg. 71 pages, paperbound. $5.00 (multi-copy discounts available). BNA Books, 1231-25th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20037.
A concise guide to the measurement of productivity in the industrial plant, factory or service company, this new work is is intended to bridge the gap between work measurement and national productivity measure. It is directed primarily at the company manager as well as those who assist him in the management of operations, but it also would be of interest to industrial engineers and economists.
By virtue of legislation and guide lines set by the government under the national economic stabilization program, reliable measures of productivity have become a necessity. While the concepts explored in this book are often sophisticated, professional jargon is avoided in order to provide a "practical" guide to the manager wishing to understand just what productivity is and how to use it in measuring his firm's progress.
"Simplified Masonry Planning and Building," Second Edition, by J. Ralph Dalzell and edited by Frederick S. Merritt, 361 pages; 193 illustrations; 6 x 9; $8.95. Publication date: January, 1973 Me-Graw-Hill, 1221 Avenue of the Americas, New York, Ν.Υ. 10020.
The basic principles involved in building common types of concrete, stucco, and similar structures and pavements are described in this new work. To simplify the learning process for readers with no previous building experience, the book employs step-by-(Continued on page 34)
