step explanations and illustrations to show how masonry is planned and placed.

This edition reflects the changes that have taken place in mixing concrete and mortar, measuring techniques, and adds completely new material on packaged mixes. Included in this category of newer materials being used are precast concrete, prestressed concrete, plywood and plastics.

The late J. Ralph Dalzell was a teacher, architect, and writer of 17 building-trades textbooks and a nationally distributed column for homeowners.

VNR Metric Handbook by Leslie Fairweather, ARIBA and Jan A. Sliwa, ARIBA, Van Nostrand Reinhold, 450 W. 33rd St., New York, Ν.Υ. 10001. $5.95. Publication date: December, 1972.

The VNR Metric Handbook is the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference of its kind. It thoroughly covers the needs of architects, building surveyors, civil engineers, interior and industrial designers, engineers, building product manufacturers, and far beyond.

The handbook contains the necessary details for planning building projects of all kinds including offices, industrial buildings, public buildings, and housing, and for specific buildings ranging from indoor and outdoor athletic structures to warehouses.

Included is basic metric data of an anthropometric nature for internal and external circulation and environmental subjects such as heating, thermal and sound insulation, and condensation, as well as structural design.

The VNR Metric Handbook is the result of an original compilation of papers from Britain's Architects' Journal and is now in its third edition in England. Well over 100,000 copies have been sold in the last three years, and for most of that time, it has been a best seller on the RIBA bookshops' monthly list of architectural titles.

"Manual of Structural Design and Engineering Solutions" by Maurice E. Welmer, P.A., ARA, and Stephen L. Baron, P.E. 8½ x 11 (oversize) with visible tab indexing, 1,120 pages. $49.95. Publication date: December, 1972. Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, N.J. 07632.

What do architects and engineers do when they come to the phase in a project calling for the structural design drawings? When should a mechanical engineer provide the foundation for a machine? When should an architect specify the support for the "look" he is creating?

This new manual provides more than 850 individual solutions to basic problems in structural engineering. Architects and engineers can use this book in at least four ways: 1) to brief themselves on design problems outside the scope of their professional training; 2) to determine which formulas apply to a given design problem; 3) to solve a good many design situations simply by substituting their own numerical values in the formulas which Welmer uses to present his examples, and 4) to consult the scores of worked-out reference tables on sizes, weights, functions, properties of materials, loads, stresses, and the like.

Structural Design Guide to the ACI Building Code by Paul F. Rice, Registered Professional Engineer and Edward S. Hoffman, Registered Structural and Professional Engineer. 426 pages plus index; 249 illustrations; 6 x 9; Van Nostrand Reinhold 450 W. 33rd St., New York, N.Υ. 10001; $19.95. Publication date: October, 1972.

This book is a guide to the Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete (ACI 318-71) and will save the user time in reinforced concrete design. It is organized to assist the structural engineer in routine applications of the 1971 ACI Building Code. Code requirements applicable to the design of structural building elements, scattered through various Code chapters, have been assembled into separate chapters on each principal structural element. Explanations of requirements difficult to interpret are followed by numerical examples.

Each step in the examples is referenced to the applicable Code provisions. Computer-prepared solutions to cover the usual design-range are presented as convenient table equations, or curves for design shortcuts to save the user's time in solving particularly intricate Code requirements.

Wherever possible, this book converts Code formulas from the review form (or trial design form) to direct design form and presents simple appropriate formulas, tabulations, and charts for longhand direct design. It is intended to save the valuable time of an engineer familiar with standard theories of reinforced concrete design and analysis to design in conformance with drastically new Code provisions. References are given for those wishing to study the background research or development of the Code.
