A portion of the standing-room-only audience that turned out for the opening session of the '73 Convention in the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott. All of the sessions featured a full turn-out of delegates.
Presentations were made by Neal English, Executive Director of IMI, who described the promotional strides being made in behalf of the masonry industry (more than $200,000 will be spent by IMI on prestige magazine advertising alone in 1973), and Albert Isberner, research engineer with Portland Cement Association, Skokie, III., who outlined the latest advances in all-weather construction research.
Acting as session director was Paul Rosensteel, MCAA Field Representative from Phoenix, Ariz. Seminars also were conducted on "Negotiations Under Phase III," directed by Anthony Zotollo of New York, who also serves as Co-chairman of the Masonry Industry Craft Board, and on "Maximum Security for Your Masonry Walls," with Ray Wimer, MCAA Field Representative from Portland, Ore., acting as session director.
Zotollo summarized the consensus of opinion at his meeting with this comment: "We are obligated to negotiate in order to protect our product and to keep our product competitive not only for your benefit as mason contractors but also for the benefit of our employees."
Rounding out the morning's activities was a stimulating panel discussion on equal employment practices "Civil Rights, EEOC-Today"-featuring as speakers George Plumb of Pedersen & Houpt: Merlin L. Taylor, Special Assistant to the President of BM & PIU, and Robert Ebelling, MCAA Secretary and Chairman of the National Joint Bricklaying Apprenticeship Committee, Detroit. MCAA members were strongly urged to familiarize themselves with civil rights laws that exist on both local and national levels to avoid legal entanglements.
At the Annual Meeting on Tuesday, February 27, David B. Soloff, Jr. was reelected President of the Association. Reelected to serve with him were Charles Velardo, Vice (Continued on page 22)
