Loadbearing Masonry
Building in Florida
A unique method of apartment construction is being employed in Hialeah, Fla., thanks to the willingness of Dade County authorities to adapt new methods of masonry technology.
The nine-story, 101-unit apartment house at 555 E. 1st Ave. is the first loadbearing masonry construction in the county to reach that height. It's also believed to be only the second building of its type in this area.
Prime reason for the use of loadbearing construction, according to Jack Cook (MCAA), mason contractor for the apartment house and president of the Miami Masonry Guild, is that it greatly reduces building time, thereby lowering costs. As opposed to conventional building methods where a "skeleton" of poured concrete tie beams and columns support the structure, loadbearing masonry systems eliminate need for extra construction.
Texas Promotes Masonry
At Architects' Meeting
The Texas State Joint Apprentice & Mason Training Committee jumped into masonry promotion in a big way by exhibiting at the recent convention of the Texas Society of Architects in El Paso.
A special booth was built entirely of masonry-one side of concrete slump block, one side of antique brick in a herring-bone pattern, and the third side of glazed brick in a brown and creme pattern. The floor was red brick set without mortar, and the table a pallet of white Norman brick.
All of this was topped off by a pretty face and figure in the person of "Miss Brick" (Judy Brown) of the Colorado Masonry Institute. Manning the booth were Gilbert Cook, state co-ordinator; Don Halsell, Texas Brick Institute: Vaughan Gray, Texas Concrete Masonry Association, and Don McCullough, executive director of the Associated Masonry Contractors of Texas.
Materials and labor were donated by generous El Paso masons and suppliers. Architects attending the convention were said to have displayed unusual interest in the exhibit.
Alpha Earnings Double
Bernard Richards, president of Alpha Portland Industries, Inc., Easton, Pa., announced that third-quarter earnings were more than double those of a year ago. Per share regular earnings for the third quarter and first nine months of 1972 were 734 and $1.45, respectively.
