Cement Shortage In
Florida To Be Eased

Florida's critical shortage of cement should be eased substantially under a long-range agreement announced by Ideal Cement Co. of Tampa and a major Venezuelan manufacturer.

A spokesman for Ideal, an associate member of the Miami Masonry Guild and a division of Ideal Basic Industries, Inc., said the commitment calls for CA Venezolana de Cementos to furnish 2.5 million barrels of cement annually for the parent company's operations in Florida as well as Alabama, Texas, Louisiana and North Carolina.

First shipments are expected to arrive at Ideal's port storage facilities in Tampa and West Palm Beach before mid-1973.

Minority Apprentices
Placed Through
"Outreach" Program

More than 6,300 minority youths have become apprentices in building and construction trades through the Apprenticeship Outreach Program the past fiscal year. Secretary of Labor James D. Hodgson reported that the figure was almost double the number in 1970, when 3,445 were placed.

Since the program began in 1968, more than 17,000 minority youths have been placed in apprenticeships, 13,500 of them during the past three fiscal years. Hodgson said the three-year increase of over 13,500 "is still another example of the thrust of President Nixon's efforts on behalf of minority youth, especially by way of apprenticeship in skilled occupations."

He said, "The achievements of the program, when tied together with other training efforts to get more minority youths into the construction trades, indicate that your direction is right and that our goals are being met."

NABD Report
By: Jeffrey L. Brock.

Washington, D.C. This year's annual meeting held October 22-25 in Boca Raton, Fla., was a most successful turnout for the brick industry. One of the major changes voted upon by our members and resolved by the board of directors was our new name-National Association of Brick Distributors. It has been apparent that the phrase National Association of Distributors and Dealers of Structural Clay Products has often been misunderstood and usually explained by some shorter term. Therefore, it was felt the name selected would clearly identify the organization and also aid in further promotion.

Donald Sanchez, Chessie System, Inc. (formerly C&O and B&O Railroads), attended the convention this year to answer inquiries from our members. He annuonced that general claims were down 12-2%.

Elected to the presidency this year was Howard Dudding, Great Southern Supply Co., Houston, Texas. The other members on the executive committee were the following: vice president- William J. Rudolph, Old Fort Supply Co., Inc., Fort Wayne, Ind.; vice president A. Daniel Barton, Jr., O.W. Ketcham, Inc., Philadelphia, Penn.; treasurer C. K. Davis, American Brick Co., Chicago, III.; and Joseph L. Weckesser, Jr., Weckesser Brick Co., Rochester, N.Y.

During the past two months, NABD has obtained five new members. They are: Hockers Bros. Brick & Tile Co., Inc., Green Bay, Wis.; Snyder Concrete Products, Inc., Dayton, Ohio; Fairmount Building Supplies Corp., Norfolk, Va.; Anaheim Builders Supply, Inc., Anaheim, Calif., and H. J. Schmitz & Sons, Inc., Monroe, Mich. This surely indicates genuine enthusiasm among members and the importance of a strong, unified organization -an association working together to pursue its common goals.

This month NABD welcomes two new members: Fidelity Builders Supply, Inc., Lima, Ohio. Sponsored by Michigan Vitrified Brick & Tile Co., the firm's president, Frank Frost, is the NABD representative. And from Rochester, N.Y., we introduce George Miller Brick Co. F. Joseph Degnan represents the firm, sponsored by Binghamton Brick Co., Binghamton, N.Y. Our membership now stands at 121, and that's a good way to start the new year right!

Our Ohio chapter is keeping busy with its panelization seminar. It will take place February 13 at the Kent State University Student Union. Speakers will include Bill Vetovitz, Vetovitz Brothers Construction Co., and Nathan Lavine, architect on Vetovitz's Detroit job.

Members from the NABD board of directors and various representatives from key marketing areas gathered at BIA headquarters to hear BIA's 1973 promotion program-this being a joint meeting to suggest gathering statistical information regarding the end use of our product. It is highly possible that future meetings will occur, thus promoting greater cooperation between the manufacturing and sales segments of the industry.
