25th New Jersey Bricklaying Contest
This was the scene at the Garden State Plaza Shopping Center, Paramus, N.J., where the 25th annual apprentice bricklaying contest was held recently under the sponsorship of the Bergen County Masons Apprentice Training & Educational Fund and the New Jersey Bricklayers, Plasterers & Cement Masons Apprentice Training & Educational Fund. The contest, which attracted thousands of shoppers on a Saturday morning, drew attention to the importance of masonry in construction.

Kneeling from the left are the three winners: Mike Mastro, second-year apprentice from Local 44, Ridgewood; Scott Holloway, first-year apprentice, and Stephen Rafferty, third-year apprentice, both of Local 4, Long Branch. Standing from the left are Congressman William Widnall of Bergen County; Henry J. Massaro, business agent of Local 44 and chairman of the contest; Michael Pedicini of Summit, president of the New Jersey State Conference of the BM & PIU and the New Jersey State Building Trades Council who was general chairman of the event; James F. The sign encourages all spectators to become sidewalk superintendents at the New Jersey state-wide bricklaying contest. Gina Torino appears to be taking it all in, especially the part about sand, with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Torino of Elmwood Park.
